For wine territories, great vintages, even difficult times for the world’s economies, can make a difference. Especially when it comes to wines which, by their nature, are not intended for immediate consumption, but to age for a few more years in the cellars of collectors and restaurateurs, before being able to express themselves at their best. A speech that fits perfectly for the Brunello di Montalcino, which arrived on the market with the excellent and highly celebrated Riserva 2015 and especially the 2016 vintage, sees orders run, at least judging by the State bands for bottles ready for sale, “pulverizing the primates. Overall, the first quarter of 2021 closed with an increase of 37% on 2020 – underlines the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino – and at + 23% on the average of the last 10 years. In particular, after a first two months of + 19% on the same period (Covid free) last year, the month of March was by far the best of the decade, with + 92% on the average recorded from 2011 to today.
“It is not rhetoric to say that our last two vintages, among the best ever in terms of quality, are turning out to be even stronger than the tragedy we are experiencing – said the president of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium, Fabrizio Bindocci – the numbers say that in 2020 the bottles placed on the market were 12% more than the previous year, and now, after the successes achieved by the international critics, we are dealing with a new vintage that from mid-November to today is registered deliveries of over 5.2 million bottles, which are equivalent to almost half of the entire new production on the market in 2021 ”.
According to the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, the foreign export markets of the DOCG are in particular growing strongly, starting from the historic US demand which is reopening its catering.
A fundamental role was played by international critics, who prepared the ground and created the expectation for a product that, commercially speaking, is a must have for collectors, enthusiasts and haute cuisine in the United States and around the world. .
