A strong intervention by the Government in defense of the wine sector: today the “Wine Sector” asked the Minister of Agricultural Policies, Stefano Patuanelli, who, for the first time, officially met, together with Undersecretary Gian Marco Centinaio, the presidents of Alleanza Cooperative, Assoenologi, Italian Cia-Agricoltori, Confagricoltura, Copagri, Federdoc, Federvini and Unione Italiana Vini (Uiv), to discuss the most pressing issues concerning the sector.

First of all, the plan to fight cancer developed at European level and the implementation report of the alcohol strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO), which contain proposals capable of causing serious prejudices to Italian wine, are on the table. In the document presented, the Commission indicates some actions it intends to take to achieve the goal of reducing the harmful use of alcohol. Plan supported by a draft parliamentary report that further tightens the Commission’s indications and risks giving them political legitimacy. Furthermore, the WHO, in the dedicated action plan, intends to reduce alcohol consumption by 20% (and not the “harmful” consumption of alcohol) by 2030. “Both documents – explained the representatives of the” Wine Sector “- are at a rather advanced stage of the discussion: it is essential that Italy carries out with official acts, in all the appropriate fora, instances of balance, common sense and reasonableness , elements that have always distinguished the Italian position, avoiding fiscal recommendations and prohibition-type regulations which, far from targeting abuse, have the potential to inflict unjustified damage on a flagship sector of the agri-food sector of our country and which they penalize the moderate consumption of wine, one of the main components of the Mediterranean diet recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site “.

The other urgent issue is that of promotion, because a reform has been launched in Europe which risks excluding wine products from the possibility of accessing the budget dedicated to promotional activities in Europe and in the world. Minister Patuanelli was therefore asked to pay close attention to the issue, so that the sector is not excluded from the projects that have made it possible, over the years, to achieve important results in terms of value and exports. The same organizations of the wine sector have reiterated the need to be involved in the definition of the national institutional communication plan for the sector that the Ministry of Agriculture has decided to adopt.

Then, the Prosek question, on which the “Wine Sector” appreciated the support of the Government and the establishment of a dedicated working group, which today saw the first act take place, with the meeting in the Senate of the Republic of the Councilors to the Agriculture of Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Piedmont, who reiterated how they are playing “a game that already sees a front of producer consortia lined up against the Croatian Prošek, which also intends to team up with all the players in national and international politics. We know very well that Prošek is a different product – said the Councilor for Agriculture of the Veneto Region, Federico Caner – but we have to fight the principle of Italian sounding abroad. After all, the very name Prošek brings to mind the bubbles of our country. If there is a European standard, I do not understand why the door should be opened to these recognitions, creating confusion in the consumer. Having said that, we have prepared a document, approved by the Conference of the Regions and carried out by the Agricultural Policies Commission, which we have sent to the Minister responsible for the matter. We unanimously ask that all initiatives be activated to oppose Croatia’s request. Now the game must be closed in Brussels ”. Now – the Sector reiterated – it is necessary to standardize the arguments in solid defense of the rejection of the recognition of the Croatian Traditional Mention.

Lastly, the imminent deadlines of the wine CMO and the single standard on sustainability were represented, as well as the difficulties with respect to payments on storage, reduction of yields and granting of new authorizations. “The Ministry of Agriculture and the entire Government cannot allow elements to affect a central sector of the country’s economic policy”, underlined Minister Stefano Patuanelli. As for the promotion of wine abroad, Patuanelli reiterated that “The value of healthy wine promotion cannot be questioned. Consumers need to be informed and their awareness of consumption increased. The theme of promotion is central because the consumer must be informed and not conditioned. It is the same battle that we carry on against the Nutriscore, a system that conditions rather than inform “. Finally, for the question of the registration of the mention of the Croatian Prošek, the Minister stressed that “Italian Sounding cannot be institutionalized”. “We must all go to Europe with the same voice”, finally added the Undersecretary of Agricultural Policies Gian Marco Centinaio.“We have decided to give a legal approach to this game that affects all denominations. If we yield on the Prošek we risk opening a leak in all the Italian and European denominations ”.
