Our Food Stories Behind bars tell of Taste of Freedom, dinners, a journey through evenings full of stories, dishes and flavors.

On the occasion of the Milan Food Week, scheduled from 3 to 9 May, a Milan starts Taste of Freedom, an interesting experiment by social and culinary story of the prison, thanks to
Viale dei Mille Consortium.

Six evenings in five different restaurants in Milan with a unique format of its kind. An unexpected and unpredictable meeting of stories, products and flavors that will tell the reality of prison work in its varied facets.

Six events in which to make the fusion between the world of food and the penal archipelago, where you can savor the taste of freedom, passing from the interpretation of 100% raw materials made in jail to the story of those in prison who found a safety barrier in restaurants.

The Viale dei Mille Consortium (of which we have already spoken here) born in 2015 on an idea of ​​the Municipality of Milan, collects the most significant work experiences in prison promoted by social enterprises in many Italian prisons, from Milan to Palermo, passing through Turin, Terni, and many others.

Taste of Freedom born from the will of the Consortium to tell the creative and economic dimension of the prison through food, to those who know little or nothing about this reality.

Each evening will take place according to an established format: a culinary proposal prepared with the products of the prison economy (from jams from the il Gabbiamo cooperative, to bread and breadsticks from the Milano Opera prison, to pasta from the Ucciardone of Palermo, to sauces of the Cremona prison, passing through vegetables and vegetables, up to the biscuits produced in the Verbania prison, to the wine and craft beer of Saluzzo).

Between one course and another you will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the products, told directly by those who make them and those who, through work during detention, have seen their lives change.

Each evening will end with a surprise in the name of autobiographical narration, the real point of synthesis of the message that the project wants to convey.

The evenings and restaurants that will participate in the initiative are:

  • Friday 3 May at 8.00 pm and Thursday 9 May at 8.00 pm dinner at restaurant / bistro All good, in via Luigi Cagnola
  • Saturday 4 May at 20.00 al In Galera restaurant, in via Cristina Belgioioso 120, at the Bollate prison

  • Tuesday 7 May – 7.30 pm aperitif at Gattò restaurant / bistro, in via Castel Morrone 10

  • Wednesday 8 May at 19.30 aperitif buffet at the Bottillery Bolts, in piazza Aquileia

  • Monday 13 May at 8.00 pm dinner at Cooperative The Liberation, in via Lomellina 14 Fb cooperativalaliberazione

The project is carried out with the support of the Cariplo Foundation engaged in the support and promotion of projects of social utility related to the sector of art and culture, the environment, personal services and scientific research, and with the patronage of the City of Milan.
