Ascoli. Social garden for prisoners, the Marino prison doubles.

Expansion of spaces dedicated to the garden for the training of prisoners.

The social garden for the recovery of prisoners, already present in the Marino del Tronto prison, now doubles with an expansion of the spaces dedicated to this initiative.

In recent days, the winter plants that will be grown have been delivered and planted.

After the positive experience started by the Region and the penitentiary administration in 2019, with the planting of olive trees, ornamental essences and the start of the vegetable garden, the recreational activity of the prisoners can now count on a horticultural area expanded by Assam , the regional agency for agricultural services, and irrigated thanks to the collaboration of the Piceno water consortium, involved in the project.

In the Ascoli penitentiary structure, the winter plants (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, cabbage, fennel and salad) have been delivered and planted in recent days and will be grown in the new spaces.

All in the presence of the Vice President of the Region, Anna Casini, and the director of the prison, Eleonora Consoli.

It is evident that the initiative of the social garden in prison has an educational purpose, allowing the inmates to independently manage a space to cultivate and then the consumption of the products obtained with this work.

After all, agricultural activity lends itself well to empowering and rehabilitating prisoners thanks to a creative and non-repetitive work commitment.

As the regional vice president recalled:

“The project started falls within the context of social agriculture that sees the Marche at the forefront in Europe, with the assignment of the coordination of the Regions involved in innovation of rural development”.

The director Consoli, for her part, hoped for a continuity of the program that would allow agricultural activity to continue within the Ascoli Institute:

“The social garden in prison was created with a protocol signed together with the Penitentiary Administration Emilia Romagna-Marche: the project is underway in the structures of Ascoli and Ancona Barcaglione, with the aim of extending it also to Ancona Montacuto and Pesaro” .

In Marino del Tronto the interventions carried out concerned:

  • the preparation of the garden,
  • the construction of an autonomous irrigation system (with recycling and sanitation of waste water),
  • training interventions for prisoners on horticulture issues.

The next goal will be to complete the activities with a course on the culinary use of self-produced vegetables by the prisoners and the prison administration staff involved.

And here the stories of food behind bars will have to tell!
