The “Brigata del Pratello” tavern is born at the Bologna juvenile prison.
A unique training experience in Italy, among those of our Food Stories behind the Bars.
The Osteria “Brigata del Pratello” was born in Bologna, at the “Siciliani” Juvenile Penal Institute (IPM), a unique training experience in Italy, promoted by:
- FOMAL, Body accredited by the Emilia-Romagna Region for professional training in the catering sector,
- and by the IPM, with the support of the Monte di Bologna and Ravenna Foundation and the Emilia Romagna Region.
The project will allow young prisoners to put into practice the knowledge acquired during the training and develop new skills in relation to the world of work and civil society.
The “Brigata del Pratello” inaugurated Thursday 10 October in via del Pratello 34 with the first of the dinners-events open to the public, in which the young prisoners who have been participating in the training course for months will be involved as cooks and waiters.
The catering service will involve around 6/8 young people from the IPM for each dinner, supported by professional chefs and maîtrees and coordinated by educators.
For the city of Bologna, the “Brigata del Pratello” will represent a welcoming place, to be attended to support the educational challenge, in the belief that each person should always have the opportunity to realize their own personal path of growth and autonomy.
The project of the Pratello Brigade aims to:
- experiment an innovative activity for the training and job placement of young prisoners;
- improve the interpersonal, technical and professional skills of course participants;
- support the autonomy of young people through guidance and accompaniment to work and coaching in the assumption of responsibility;
- favoring experiences of conviviality with anyone who wants to share encounters and unusual flavors in a unique context, helping to give voice to a hidden history of the city.
At the opening evening, the team of the Pratello Brigade welcomed institutional guests including: the Bologna Police Commissioner Gianfranco Bernabei; the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region Stefano Bonaccini; Giuseppe Colonna, President of the Court of Appeal of Bologna; Giusella Finocchiaro, President of the Monte Foundation of Bologna and Ravenna; the Prefect of Bologna Patrizia Impresa; Luigi Martello, Supervisory Magistrate; the Mayor of Bologna Virginio Merola; Antonio Pappalardo, director of the Juvenile Justice Center of Bologna; Giuseppe Spadaro, President of the Juvenile Court; Francesco Ubertini, Rector of the Alma Mater Studiorum and the Archbishop of Bologna Matteo Zuppi, to name but a few.
The dinners-events with about 40/50 “seats” will initially take place once a month – with the possibility of increasing if everything works according to plan.
They will be the fundamental opportunity to taste exquisite dishes and to get to know more closely the institutions and voluntary associations that collaborate with the “Siciliani” Institute by offering numerous activities, a precious contribution to the personal regeneration path of the prisoners.
The formative tavern project has its roots in 2008, when the first restaurant laboratory was born from the collaboration between FOMAL and IPM and thanks to the contribution of the Fondazione del Monte and the Emilia-Romagna Region.
The courses organized in recent years have represented the response to the need of young people to reintegrate positively into the social context through work as an instrument of redemption, and the inauguration of the Osteria today testifies to the incessant commitment to guarantee the rehabilitation of the condemned in article 27 of the Italian Constitution.
This is the testimony of Beatrice Draghetti, President of FOMAL:
«We all hope that at the Osteria you feel good and eat well, but above all we want the motivation for this experience to be successful and positive feedback.
Whatever the crime for which young people are inside, it is unthinkable that the word failure is written on their life, being ‘inside’ must also correspond to the concrete possibility of reacting, being reborn, resuming the good path of people and citizens“
Giusella Finocchiaro, President of the Monte Foundation of Bologna and Ravenna, positively convinced that the experience will constitute a model to follow also for other national realities, declares:
“The tavern in the juvenile prison is an example that well represents the nature of our projects and the activities we support, which have as a priority the commitment on the front of social integration, education, education and culture from here we leave if we want to give hope to the future ”.
And we are happy to have new Food Stories behind bars to tell and to live.
