The purchase of the 6 hectares of vineyards owned by her mother Josetta Saffirio by Sara Vezza, who had rented them for years, is not just a business, but also and above all the closing of a circle and a long saga family, which began in the first half of the twentieth century. At the time, in fact, Ernesto Saffirio, Josetta’s father, began to cultivate the vineyards purchased decades earlier by his father Giovanni Battista, who arrived in Langa at the end of the nineteenth century, selling the grapes to local producers. It was Josetta, in 1975, who made the decisive turning point for the company: she graduated in agriculture, together with her husband Ernesto, an oenologist, she started making wine. In 1982 the first Barolo arrived on the market, but after the successes of the late 1980s, production was stopped. It will only resume in 1999, thanks to her daughter Sara, who has since started a long journey towards sustainability and business expansion. Today, the property has 11.5 hectares of indigenous variety vines, mainly Nebbiolo, Barbera and the rare Rossese Bianco, for a production of 90,000 bottles, waiting for the 16 hectares purchased in Murazzano, planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Nero to produce Alta Langa . “I brought the vineyards and the company together after 20 years. It was a courageous and tiring choice, dictated by the deep bond and sense of respect for the sacrifices made by grandfather Ernesto and father Roberto. The objectives for the next three years are to look at the Alta Langa district and increase the production of whites and sparkling wines “, comments Sara Vezza, who is also among the three finalists of the EU Organic Awards, in the Best Organic Farmer category (we wrote about it here).
