In Volterra it is possible to dine in prison, with the Galeotte dinners.

Prison must also serve to re-educate, and with food re-education seems to work great, we know that we have been carrying out the project Stories of food Behind the Bars for years.

Each year in this medieval-style prison, citizens and tourists have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Galeotte dinners, inside the prison walls and with well-known chefs who “lend” themselves for free for one evening to cook with the inmates and also teach them some tricks of the trade.

This year’s calendar includes appointments of “Galley dinnersfrom 5 April to 9 August 2019 at the Prison House of Volterra (Pisa).

The proceeds of each evening (there are about 120 places available) is entirely donated to charity projects, carried out in collaboration with the world of lay and Catholic volunteers. This year’s edition of the Galeotte Dinners, in particular, will support non-profit organizations and national and international solidarity initiatives dedicated to the world of children.

Designed by the management of the Volterra Prison House, “Galley dinners”Is created in collaboration with Unicoop Firenze and the“ Il Cuore Si Scioglie Onlus ”Foundation (www.ilcuoresiscioglie.it).

The success of the initiative is demonstrated by the numbers, with over 1,000 participants in the last edition and more than 16,000 visitors since its debut in 2006.

The “Galley dinners”Are a unique opportunity for visitors to touch a world on the margins of society. But they are also a very involving moment for the prisoners, who thanks to the work in the kitchen and in the dining room acquire an important and useful professional background for their future. This experience for over thirty people has resulted in a job in restaurants and external structures, once the sentence has been served or according to the law that provides, in some cases, the possibility of working outside the prison, in article 21.

The initiative is carried out by the Volterra Prison House with the artistic supervision of the food and wine journalist Leonardo Romanelli. Every evening sees the participation of important wineries, whose wines – offered for free – are paired and served at the tables with the support of the sommeliers of the Fisar-Historical Delegation of Volterra, partner of the project since 2007, also engaged in the creation of courses to approach the wine aimed at promoting the reintegration of prisoners.

We have already participated in these initiatives by Galeotte dinners, and for sure we will continue to return, it is always a great opportunity to collect stories and above all experience strong sensations and unique flavors, in every sense. We had the opportunity to interview the part of “prison guards” and also the Director, the living soul of this initiative.
