Short supply chains, synergies, economies of scale, shared medium and long-term visions, network and supply chain contracts, make “industrial districts” a winning model. Even when it comes to wine, agriculture and food. Yet another confirmation comes from Intesa San Paolo’s “Annual report on the economy and finance of industrial districts 2021”. Overall, the Italian districts, in 2021, saw a rebound in turnover of + 25.2% on 2020, and + 4.3% on 2019, with exports that touched the record figure of 133 billion euros. Districts that remain competitive also in the first quarter of 2022, with + 19.3% in exports over 2021, and + 16% over 2019, with those of food and beverages well above the average, with a growth of +15, 4% on 2021, and even + 26.4% on 2019. And if the absolute best districts in terms of growth performance, profitability and capitalization were that of agricultural machinery in Padua and Vicenza, that of campers in Val d’Elsa and that of agricultural machinery of Reggio Emilia and Modena, on the wine & food front, the best ever (and n.5 at national level), is that of the Wines of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, which, with its Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and more, continues to be one of the Italian wine locomotives.
But among the best, according to Intesa San Paolo, there are also the food district of Parma, one of the hearts of the Emilian “food valley”, the dairy of Sardinia, the district of meats and cured meats of Cremona and Mantua, those of the cured meats of Parma and the meat of Verona, and again the districts of hazelnut and Piedmontese fruit, and buffalo mozzarella from Campania.

The evidence, which emerged in the Report, confirms the centrality of production chains as a factor of competitiveness in the coming years. In the districts, the average distance of supplies is very limited, although it increased in the pandemic: in 2021 it was equal to 116 kilometers, 24 less than in non-district areas. The average number of suppliers per company is also higher (29 versus 25). The ability to oversee foreign markets is another strong point of the districts that historically have a greater internationalization, measured by the number of foreign subsidiaries (29 per 100 companies vs 19 in non-district areas) and by the share of companies that export (62 , 1% vs 52.2%). The districts are also well positioned in terms of patent capacity, with 70.7 patents per 100 companies; non-district areas stop at 51.5.
