One of the most prestigious brands of world wine, Bolgheri, joins one of the strongest and most famous universal brands of made in Italy, Tuscany: if no objections arrive by 18 September, after 30 days from the publication in the Official Gazette, it will be green light to modify the specification which will establish the obligation – for the producers of Doc Bolgheri (arrived in 1994, therefore 27 years) – to insert the word Tuscany on the label, according to a proposed modification approved in the assembly by all the cellars of the Consortium for the protection of the wines of Bolgheri and Bolgheri Sassicaia Doc. An important modification to the Bolgheri specification, therefore, as is that of the ampelographic base of white wines. The wines produced with Vermentino, Sauvignon and Viognier (and no longer Trebbiano Toscano), with no percentage restrictions, in purity or in blend, will boast the white version of the Bolgheri Doc, when the modification is operational. (to which other vines with white berried grapes authorized by the Tuscany Region can also compete, up to a maximum of 40%), in full spirit with the libertarian philosophy that has always governed the Bolgheri Doc.

Which traces a large part of its fortunes to the end of the 1960s, when, at Tenuta San Guido, with the birth of Sassicaia, the Marquises Incisa della Rocchetta, with the oenologist Giacomo Tachis, invented a “wine of the future” (or, as the master called it
GinoVeronelli, “An ecstasy of the mind”, ed), so much so that, unique in Italy, the legislator had to sew on him a custom-made Doc protected by the Consortium, Bolgheri Sassicaia, recently included in the name of the Consortium. A Supertuscan – and the reference to Tuscany already appears here, as is well known – who ignited the spark for the birth and success of the territory of Bolgheri, a “great little” miracle of Made in Italy and a land of wine “pioneers”, today over 65 wineries, enclosed between the hills and the sea of Tuscany, where in just over 1,350 hectares of vineyards, where the vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and more, have found their utmost vocation, wines among the most desired and quoted by collectors are born. Precious vineyards, which today have prices above half a million euros per hectare according to WineNews estimates, and are at the center of new investments from Italy and the world, for a 2020 production of 6.5 million bottles, whose value is grown in double digits in times of a pandemic.

On the other hand, 2021 is the year in which the biennial event of en primeur returns to Bolgheri, with the Bolgheri Superiore 2019 (which will then go on sale from 1 January 2022) for tasting and the Bolgheri Rosso 2020, already on the market, in seven locations of great beauty, with an innovative mix in which the iconic cellars – from Campo alle Comete of the Campania label of Feudi di San Gregorio to Guado al Melo (Michele Scienza’s cellar), from Donna Olimpia 1898 to Michele Satta, from Ornellaia and Tenuta Argentiera, to Tenuta Guado al Tasso of Marchesi Antinori, the family that launched Bolgheri into the world with style, vision and quality – will host the emerging wineries of this particular terroir of Italy, in search of that principle which is the ability to team up, sharing values and friendships among colleagues, like in a gold medal relay … With tastings of old vintages and the latest on the market, 2018, in the dinners in the company, on 3 September, and, above all, in a widespread tasting on 4 September, from 10 am to 5 pm (but only by invitation and logically booking).

And if the bond between Bolgheri and Tuscany reaches its maximum expression in the wines, its strongest image can only be the legendary Viale dei Cipressi sung by Giosuè Carducci, the backdrop at sunset for a gala dinner, unique in the world, on Saturday 4 September, with the producers and their great labels, and every year a destination for more and more wine tourists arriving from all over the world. Great wines and characters with many stories to tell, and many new chapters to write, a beautiful and poetic natural landscape in which the cellars are the real “monuments” to visit, can only be the image of Tuscany. But also of Italy.
